Jason Piriou Memorial Trophy

In the inaugural tournament for the Jason Piriou Trophy the Vale Rec Year 6/7 lads acquitted themselves extremely well.

After a long day of exciting football the league table indicated Vale Rec and Rovers with equal points, regrettable the lads
could not carry their form into the play-off and lost to the Rovers, who in all fairness deserved their victory.

The GFA’s Secretary Neil Laine post match comments “ a match too far for Vale Rec” were accurate to say the least, our lads
just ran out of steam and could not bring into the play-off the fine performances previously shown in their other matches.

Vale Rec’s opening match in the tournament was a 3- 0 win against the North with goals from Ryan Cherry and a brace
from Thomas Dodds. This was followed by a convincing result of 5-0 in our favour against St Martins, goals came from
Cameron Hantonne with two and one each from Fergal Morrissey, Oliver Salmon and Thomas Dodds.

Our third match saw us against the eventual winners of the tournament Rovers; we started off extremely well putting Rovers
under a lot of pressure. In the second half we gained the lead with a Thomas Dodds strike that took a slight deflection prior
to hitting the back of the net. Unfortunately, we could not hold out, Rovers won a corner and from this scored a magnificent
volley at the far post, despite Andy Rumens shouts to our defence from the sideline to cover this area.

Victories in our remaining fixtures over Sylvans, Rangers and Bels saw us top the table with sixteen points, jointly with Rovers.

In the play-off despite taken the lead from a Fergal Morrissey goal the Rovers were too strong on the day and run out worthy 4-1 winners.

In summary, the tournament was well organised by the GFA and played in the true spirit of the game which we know Jason
would have been delighted with.

All participants should be proud of their efforts.
