Venue: Referee: C Gontier Vale Recreation progressed to the semi-finals of the Clydesdale FA Cup with a 4-0 win over Sylvans Vets at the Corbet Field this evening. Despite dominating for long spells and having numerous chances, Vale, to Sylvans credit, only led 2-0 at the break through strikes from skipper Ross Elliott and Martyn Moullin. But two more strikes from the hard working Marc Rihoy and substitute Ross Benfield secured a comfortable victory. Rec Coach Carl Le Tissier named a strong side for the quarter-final tie opting to leave youngsters Glenn Le Tissier, Ross Benfield and Danny Ozanne on the bench. Vale were forced into playing a patient passing game and took the lead on 20 minutes when following a penalty area scramble, Elliott was on hand to smash the ball home. The Vale skipper then somewhat harshly found himself in referee Gontier's book for what seemed like a rather innocuous challenge. Chances came a plenty for the home side with Simon Shaw blasting over the bar, Rihoy heading over a fine Miles Pengelley cross and Damien Larkin just firing wide following a great run from midfield. On 20 minutes Martyn Moullin picking the ball up on the right, rifled in a low shot to make it 2-0. Karl Bisson and Moullin both hit shots over the bar as half-time approached and Pengelley hit a high cross from the left which sailed goalwards but Gontier had blown seconds before the ball hit the back of the net. The second half began as the first with Vale knocking the ball around with ease and Pengelley saw another long range strike scrape the Sylvans bar. On 55 minutes, Vale were awarded a penalty after defender Geoff Robinson went over in the box but the normally reliable Gareth Holden put it just wide of the post. That was the last of the action for Holden who made way for David Hooper. Vale continued to exert their authority and were finally rewarded with a third goal on 64 minutes. Rihoy picked up the ball on the left and drifted into the box before unleashing a venomous drive high into the net from an acute angle. On 69 minutes, Curtis Le Noury came on for Robinson and soon after, Karl Bisson made way for Ross Benfield. It took Benfield 10 minutes to make his mark when he met a Moullin cross with a trade-mark bullet header that gave keeper Matt Walsh no chance. As the game drew to a close Rihoy hit a 20 yarder but saw his strike fly just past the post.
