Venue: Referee: G Jennings Vale Recreation moved on to the third round of the Somerset Senior Cup following a 2-0 victory over Taunton Blackbrook at the Corbet Field this afternoon. A bizarre own goal put Vale ahead on 17 minutes and Ross Benfield scored the second four minutes later to ensure victory for the home side. Vale got off to an impressive start with Karl Bisson creative in the midfield and it was his delivery into the Taunton area that saw defender Dave Anthony attempt to clear his lines only to slice the ball over the helpless keeper to give the home side the lead. Benfield twice came close with a long range effort that was superbly tipped over the bar and a header from a corner before he struck to make it 2-0. Damien Larkin smashed a shot goalwards after being set up by Gareth Holden and Benfield was on hand to get a touch and claim a deserved goal, his second of the competition. Holden himself had chances to further increase the lead but blasted over and then just failed to get on the end of an impressive Bisson through ball. The second half proved to be a much tighter affair with Taunton now playing some good football but Rec soaked up the pressure well. Both Connor Watts and Anthony missed chances for the visitors before in the latter stages, Vale thought they had increased their lead. Larkin was judged to be in an off-side position after turning in a Benfield header that had been saved by Wyatt. It was then Taunton's turn to see a goal disallowed in the final minutes. The final piece of action saw Vale keeper Jody Bisson save at point blank range and the final whistle was greeted with delight by the Vale supporters. Coach Carl Le Tissier now has to prepare for another home tie in the third round against Bridgwater Town due to take place on Saturday 19th February at the Corbet Field with a 2 pm kick-off.
