Guernsey Athletics vs Vale Recreation
2-3
Date: Venue:
28/03/2010 Corbet Field
A Gareth Holden
penalty was enough to give Vale Recreation
victory over Tics in their final game of the season this afternoon.
It was the teams' second
meeting in a week but this one turned out to be
a much closer affair.
The game was switched to
the Corbet Field after the KGV was deemed
unplayable and at the interval, Vale were 2-0 up and cruising. However
the second half saw
Tics come out with all guns blazing and they levelled
the scores before Holden
struck the winner.
The 'away' side were
forced to start the game with another change of
keeper with John Purdy, back from the UK, filling in for the injured Jody
Bisson.
Craig Tyrrell returned to take his place up front and Pete Guilbert, starting
his
second game for the first team, dropped into the right
midfield role.
As with the game four days
earlier, both teams came out firing on all
cylinders but it was Vale who drew first blood with Tyrrell prodding the ball
home from a Holden corner.
Five minutes later, the
yellows were 2-0 up after the Tics keeper could only
parry a fierce Mark Ramsden drive and Tyrrell was on hand to slot the ball
into the net.
After the interval, it was
Tics this time who stepped up the pace, pinning Vale
back in their own half and they soon reduced the deficit when they were awarded
a somewhat harsh penalty after the ball was smashed against Ross Elliott's arm
in the box. They were level five minutes later following more pressure on the
Vale goal.
Coach Carl Le Tissier then
made a couple of changes bringing on Mark Ogier for
Guilbert and Glenn Le Tissier for Marc Rihoy.
Vale were then
awarded their own dubious penalty on 77 minutes
for a foul on
Elliott and Holden smashed the ball home to regain the lead and
ultimately, win
the game.
Vale Recreation have
finished the season, currently in a much improved fourth place,
five points clear of Tics but who have two games still to play.
