Vale Recreation secured an opening day win in emphatic style with
a 4-0 victory over Athletics at the KGV.

Skipper Ross Elliott set Vale on their way after 6 minutes with fellow centre
back Jason Sarahs heading the second 5 minutes later.

Ross Benfield added the third and substitute, Glenn Le Tissier headed in the
fourth in the second half.

Vale's starting X1 showed a number of changes from their previous games
with Danny Ozanne partnering Damien Larkin in the centre of midfield and
Under 18 striker Ross Benfield joining Gareth Holden up front.

Coach, Carl Le Tissier called on a bright and lively start from his side and he
was given just that by his players as Vale took the game by the scruff of the
neck.

After pinning Tics back from the opening whistle, Vale deservedly took the
lead after 6 minutes when Elliott powered home a near post header from a
Holden corner.

Full of confidence, Vale were dominant and more than made up for the
disappointing display against Saints in the Rawlinson Cup.

A second goal was always on the cards with Vale looking lively, and Sarahs
provided that goal on 11 minutes heading in a Holden 'training ground'
free-kick.

Things got worse for Tics on 34 minutes when Benfield latched on to an under
hit back-pass and steered the ball in off the far post.

Tics to their credit were far more solid in the second period but failed to
convert a number of chances of their own, coming up against a Vale keeper
determined to keep a clean sheet.

Tics despite their much improved display were always vunerable at the back
and substitute Le Tissier wrapped things up with another header to make it 4-0.

Carl le Tissier was delighted with his team's performance claiming the first half
to be the best 45 minutes in more than a year.

Another huge positive was the midfield pairing of Ozanne and Larkin. With Rory
Moriarty still recovering from his injuries, coach Le Tissier must have been happy
with their tireless performance.
